“Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together.” – Elizabeth Taylor
This has always been one of my favored quotes from Elizabeth Taylor. There’s something about putting on a swipe of lipstick that is empowering and rejuvenating. Whether one is feeling tired, sick, run down or down in the dumps, a little bit of lipstick in say, a sultry shade of siren red has the ability to instantly inject a shot of glamour and sparkle into one’s look. Go ahead and call me high maintenance, but I rarely leave the house without at least a stain on and have around sixteen tubes of lipstick in my purse (something my coworkers enjoy playfully teasing me about). When it comes to what I put on my pucker I am hardly monogamous. It’s difficult for me to commit to wearing one shade throughout the day and I will usually have changed my lipstick by mid-day and in-turn changed my look.
Because variety is the spice of life and summer is just around the corner I have recently added a few new shades to my lipstick arsenal. With this in mind I have chosen a few punchy lipsticks that are perfect for summer.
Normally I would never purchase a purple lipstick unless it was Halloween and I was dressing up as Iggy Izalea. I came across this lipstick when it was delivered to me in this month’s Birchbox (a subscription beauty box) and was more than pleasantly surprised. While it looks garishly purple in the package, it glides on to reveal a lovely raspberry/fuschia hue that is undoubtedly bold yet flattering and feminine.
I wanted a nude that didn’t make my lips blend into my very fair skin. Honeyed Bloom by Covergirl is really the perfect shade of nude for me. With just a slight undertone of rose, it goes on nearly matte and instantly warms up the complexion. Being that it is so creamy and pigmented, this rosy nude would pop against a summer tan.
Normally I reserve my rusty reds and rich berry shades for fall and winter. However, this mega-moisturizing stain from Revlon goes on sheer and natural and is flecked with specks of gold. This garnet inspired hue is flattering on nearly every skin tone and creates a flushed air of romance.
There are reds. And then there are reds. Aptly named “Rich Red”, this matte lipcolour from E.L.F (an acronym for Eyes Lips Face) is unapologeticly, almost abnoxiously scarlet. If “Adore” (above) was Audrey Hepburn, then this diva is Marilyn Monroe. While this shade is definitely not for the demure or modest, there’s nothing like a plush pair of red lips against a golden summer glow. Pair with a breezy white sundress and snakeskin sandals for a look that is scorchingly sultry.
Any lipsticks that you are loving right now? I always love to find new shades so please feel free to share in the comments!
