Top 5 Summer Denim Trends

There was a time when I paid little attention to denim. A few years ago, as far as I was concerned, jeans were jeans whether they were twenty dollars from Old Navy or a two hundred dollar pair of JBrands, I could not have cared less. And while I still believe that one can find an amazing pair of jeans at a bargain price, I have definitely developed a stronger appreciation for premium denim. The truth is that an amazing fitting pair of jeans is a treasured and essential part of one’s wardrobe. A great pair of jeans goes with everything and while I like to keep a few essential denim styles in my arsenal at all times (I have an addiction to distressed, faded boyfriend jeans and have more pairs that are actually necessary), I also like to keep up to date on what’s new. With this in mind, here are five denim trends that I am particularly loving this season.

1. Dish – Relaxed Skinny in Classic Indigo

I am a huge fan of boyfriend jeans. I have way too many pairs and always find myself looking for more. What I love about this pair of relaxed skinny jeans from local label Dish Jeans is that is has the slouchy, effortless look of a boyfriend jean but is slightly slimmer so that it is a little more figure flattering (and diaper bum is not an issue – the one fall back of my favorite baggy style). You may remember Dish Jeans from years ago (I know I had a few pairs that I wore all the time) but they have completely re-branded as a line of performance denim. With the look and feel of premium denim and the technical elements of athletic apparel, Dish is comfortable and stylish enough for every day life but is stretchy, durable and breathable enough to be worn for activities as strenuous as cross-fit, biking and power yoga. Jeans that can take you from the office, to cocktails, to evening Pilates? Sounds like the perfect pair for a non-stop busy lady like me.

2. AG The Legging Ankle – 10 Years Light Onyx Destroyed

I have always had a soft spot for AG jeans. Their cuts are always incredibly flattering and their fabrics ridiculously soft. Distressed denim is a huge trend for summer and this soft shade of grey is a sophisticated update on the usual bleached style (and transitions seamlessly into Fall). Pair with a slinky tank and strappy sandals for a night out or a slouchy t-shirt and converse for a more casual look.

3. Citizens of Humanity Charlie Petite Super Flare in Outpost

70s inspired fashion has been a prevalent theme everywhere from the streets to the runway collections of major designers such as Gucci and Jill Stuart. The trick to keeping this trend from looking costume-y or tacky is to keep it subtle. These flared jeans from Citizens of Humanity (one of my favorite denim brands) are stream-lined and modern while the frayed, embroidered hem and gentle distressing gives just a passing nod to our favorite bohemian era.

4. Topshop – MOTO Selvedge Girlfriend Jeans

This may come as a surprise to some people but Topshop has an amazing selection of denim. They have a lot of different fits, washes and styles and go for a pretty good price. A twist on the popular boyfriend jean, these “girlfriend” jeans are a little more slim-fitting making them a great choice for petite ladies or women who want something that is still comfy and laid backย but a little more fitted. Roll them up to make them cropped and to enhance the relaxed vibe.

5. Big Blue – Leona in White Destroyed

A crisp pair of white jeans is a look that I love. So clean, elegant and pristine. That’s why I love the subtle distressing on this cropped pair. It’s just enough edge but is still feminine and lighthearted – perfect for summer.
